Recognizing Retro-Reflectors with an Obliquely-Oriented Multi-Point Sonar and Acoustic Flow

چکیده
This paper applies acoustic principles and a novel scanning method motivated by acoustic flow to recognize retro-reflectors directly from sonar echoes while performing drive-by scanning. Right-angle corners and cylinders form specular retro-reflectors that produce strong echoes whose features can be easily identified. A multi-point sonar produces a point process whose density encodes the echo amplitude and allows strong echoes to be isolated. In drive-by scanning an obliquely-oriented sonar beam passes over a retro-reflector which then exhibits a sequence of strong echoes having a pattern predicted by a forward model. Drive-by scans of a simple retro-reflector, a complex hallway environment and distant objects illustrate the method. An algorithm recognizes and localizes the retro-reflector by performing a two-dimensional search to find coordinates producing range readings matching the data in a weighted-least-squared error sense. A conventional Polaroid 6500 ranging module produced 5,000 sonar points in a drive-by scan of a hallway, which the algorithm converted into six corner locations. Interfering reflectors were detected by large deviations from the predicted template. Echoes from occluded retroreflectors up to 7 m range were analyzed. Recognizing objects directly from echoes extends sonar sensing from data acquisition to landmark identification for robot navigation. Axi-symmetric Stagnation–Point Flow and Heat Transfer Obliquely Impinging on a Rotating Circular Cylinder
Laminar stagnation flow, axi-symmetrically yet obliquely impinging on a rotating circular cylinder, as well as its heat transfer is formulated as an exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Rotational velocity of the cylinder is time-dependent while the surface transpiration is uniform and steady. The impinging stream is composed of a rotational axial flow superposed onto irrotational rad...
متن کاملMobile Robot Sonar Backscatter Algorithm for Automatically Distinguishing Walls, Fences, and Hedges
We present an algorithm to distinguish several types of brick walls, picket fences, and hedges based on the analysis of backscattered sonar echoes. The echo data are acquired by a mobile robot with a single-transducer 50 kHz pulse-echo sonar computer-controlled scanning system packaged as its sensor head. For several locations along a wall, fence, or hedge, a fan of backscatter sonar echoes is ...

In 2002 high-resolution sidescan sonar images of a mound area at the SW Rockall Trough Margin were recorded with the TOBI deep towed sidescan sonar. Processed TOBI images with a pixel resolution of 6 metres provide a unique overview of the carbonate mound distribution and related sedimentary features around the mounds. Three morphologically distinct areas can be recognised on the TOBI mosaic. I...
متن کاملProbability-Based Recognition Framework for Underwater Landmarks Using Sonar Images †
This paper proposes a probability-based framework for recognizing underwater landmarks using sonar images. Current recognition methods use a single image, which does not provide reliable results because of weaknesses of the sonar image such as unstable acoustic source, many speckle noises, low resolution images, single channel image, and so on. However, using consecutive sonar images, if the st...
متن کاملEcosystem management in 4 dimensions
Management of marine resources is supported by extensive use of acoustic data. Ecosystem management requires simultaneous observations of marine organisms and their interactions. The use of quantitative sonar combined with vertical oriented echo sounders is essential: the multi-frequency echosounder data is used to remotely identify acoustic scattering categories and the spatial distribution of...
